Sadly, a traumatic brain injury can happen suddenly and be life changing. There have been several such injuries in the news and other media outlets lately which have caused conversations as well as controversy. One recent story involving a Massachusetts college athlete that has suffered more than one traumatic brain injury has certainly drawn attention to the topic and may make others think twice about their involvement in sports.
The college student told his story of how he had suffered several concussions, six to be exact, and how each one brought on different symptoms and caused different problems. Five of these head injuries were suffered during high school. Each one had different symptoms such as headaches to dizzy spells, and each lasted different amounts of time. Although not many college age students retire, after Thanksgiving break he felt it was in his best interest.
Cases involving brain injuries have ranged from elementary age athletes to professional athletes. As in this case, football players seem to be the main focus right now. Questions concerning who is responsible for these injuries have made headlines across the nation. Whether it is the organizations running the leagues or the equipment that is used, many lawsuits have been filed and action is being taken.
Massachusetts residents that have suffered a traumatic brain injury as the result of athletics or some other accident may want to research their rights under the relevant laws. When a person or company is negligent, the affected individuals may be entitled to monetary compensation to help with accident-related expenses. Loved ones that are taking care of a person recovering from a brain injury may even wish to take action on their behalf.
