Traumatic brain injury may impact Massachusetts athletes

A traumatic brain injury can occur in several ways. Unfortunately, a traumatic brain injury can often result in a person needing long term rehabilitation or there may not be a potential for them to recover. Residents may be interested in a recent article that stated 4,400 head injuries occurred during school sports in Massachusetts alone. This could be eye opening for residents and certainly for parents.

The highest number of concussions reported came from an all boys school. School officials that were interviewed stated that head injuries were up by 1,000 this year, but noted that is good news. Not because of the number of injuries, but because they are now required to be reported. The numbers are still controversial though because some of the larger schools don't appear to be reporting injuries, therefore this number may not be accurate.

When a traumatic brain injury occurs, a person may want to determine if there is fault and if a person or in this case a school system is at fault. Although it is known that a certain amount of risk comes with participating in sports, there is also a certain amount of responsibility that can be expected of the school system or even the manufacturer of the sports equipment. If any of these factors are determined to have caused the injuries, a victim or their family may have the right to file a civil lawsuit against the responsible party.

Any Massachusetts family that has been impacted by a traumatic brain injury may want to look into their rights under the applicable state laws. When negligence has played a part, the victim or their family may be entitled to monetary compensation to help cover accident related expenses including any long term medical care. Having an understanding of the laws and taking the proper steps can help ensure adequate compensation is received.
