Massachusetts motorcycle accidents could be caused by cell phones

Massachusetts residents may be aware of the large number of motorcycle accidents that happen each year. While many riders typically take precautions to protect themselves, sometimes drivers they share the road with don't do the same. A recent article discussing cell phone usage has shown that distracted driving could be the cause for many motorcycle accidents.

With modern technology so accessible, a driver can be tempted to check their cell phone for a text message, an email or even social media notifications while driving. Recent reports have shown that being distracted by a cell phone is as dangerous if not more dangerous than driving while intoxicated. This may be unsettling for the innocent drivers on the road affected by the careless actions of others.

The most recent data available dates back to 2011 in which over 3,000 accidents were caused by distracted driving. Although most states have implemented new laws banning the use of texting or holding the phone to talk while driving, it has not impacted the number of crashes as some had hoped it would. Even in states where hands-free devices are allowed, the statistics still have shown no improvement.

Any Massachusetts resident who feels they have been the victim in a motorcycle accident due to a careless driver may want to look into their rights under the applicable state laws. Motorcycle accidents can cause serious injury and financial devastation for some victims. By having an understanding of one's rights, they can be more hopeful they will receive monetary compensation to help cover lost expenses directly related to the accident.
