Massachusetts bicycle accident concerns citizens about safety

Bicycle riders have enjoyed the warmer temperatures, but have also been reminded of the dangers of riding. A bicycle accident that claimed the life of a Massachusetts man last summer is still making headlines. The man, who was a husband and father, was killed not far from his home when he was struck by a truck.

This case has drawn the attention of so many in the community for several reasons. The intersection in which it happened has been looked at multiple times because of the safety issues. The city has installed a red light that they later added a strobe light to and written a number of citations, but even that has not been enough to keep these types of accidents from happening. While residents are asking for bike lanes, it has shown to be physically impossible to make that happen. Although they are still looking into other options, a decision has yet to be made on the best way to rectify the dangerous situation.

After months, the driver of the truck ultimately was not indicted. The victim's family has since filed a lawsuit against not only the driver, but the trucking company the driver worked for at the time of the accident. This family has had to endure not only the loss of their loved one, but have no doubt been faced with final medical expenses as well as burial expenses that could all potentially be recovered from a civil suit. While they can't get their loved one back, they can hopefully help secure their financial future as well as continue to try to make the necessary changes at the intersection to prevent future accidents.

Any Massachusetts rider that has been involved in a bicycle accident may be best served to look into their rights under the applicable state laws. As in this case, even if criminal charges aren't filed or the accused is found not guilty, a civil suit could still be an appropriate course of action. A victim could be faced with mounds of medical bills, lost wages, and long term health care needs that could all potentially be recovered if an appropriate proactive approach is taken.
