Another bicyclist injured in a crash near Massachusetts campus

Bicycling has become a very popular way to travel, especially around college campuses. Unfortunately, there are inherent dangers that go along with bike riding, such as vulnerability to vehicles. Recently, a University of Massachusetts student was injured in a crash with a vehicle.

The 20-year-old student was reportedly riding his bicycle at the intersection of North Maple Street and Rocky Hill Road in Hadley, a short distance from the Amherst campus. According to reports, the driver of the vehicle that collided with the cyclist was traveling westbound on Rocky Hill Road when her vehicle struck the cyclist heading north on North Maple Street. The 29-year-old driver stated that she did not see the bicyclist because the sun was in her eyes, a common occurrence that prompts motorists to exercise special care in these conditions.

Authorities believe that the driver of the vehicle did not intentionally hit the cyclist, and that she was driving with the green light. Unfortunately, the cyclist now is in critical condition at Baystate Medical Center. Hospital officials have not indicated what the extent of his injuries is.

The young man injured in this accident, along with his family, may believe the driver was negligent, regardless of whether she is actually charged with a crime. Should the injured cyclist choose, he might utilize Massachusetts personal injury laws to pursue claims that the driver was negligent in a manner that caused or contributed to the bicycle accident and injuries that resulted. Should it be found that she was negligent; the injured student can press forward with claims for compensation for his injuries and medical expenses. Many conditions while driving require motorists to exercise reasonable care to prevent others from being injured in a crash, and continuing to drive when one's vision is impaired by sunlight or other factors could be deemed negligence under our state's personal injury laws.
