Preventing fatal bicycle accidents in Massachusetts

Massachusetts offers many great urban and scenic locations for bicyclists to enjoy a good ride. However, there are dangers that go along with the freedom and flexibility of riding a bicycle in heavily populated areas. Officers in Boston recently tried to spread the word about bicycle safety to riders in order to prevent the continuation of a number of bicycle accident injuries and fatalities.

Hub roads in Boston have seen at least four accidents where bicyclists have been killed this year alone. The most recent accident involved an international student at Boston University who was struck by a bus around 6:30 p.m. near the intersection of Brighton and Harvard Avenues. The driver of that bus has been removed from service as the investigation continues.

Three other fatalities in the same area include a woman killed in South Boston while riding her bicycle in September. A graduate student was struck and killed by a bus in June. In September, a 63-year-old bicyclist was killed by an apparent drunk driver.

Each of these accidents has led city officials to reevaluate roadways to find the places where cyclists are most vulnerable. Plans have begun to provide lanes for bicyclists that will hopefully alleviate accidents in the future.

Sadly, even when bicyclists follow safety guidelines, they are sometimes struck by vehicles through no fault of their own. In such cases as these, surviving families may benefit from understanding Massachusetts laws surrounding bicycle accidents as they consider the possibility of filing a wrongful death lawsuit in order to gain compensation for the losses they have suffered.
