Massachusetts construction accidents: Worker involved in cave-in

A Massachusetts worker sustained injuries in a freak accident recently. Construction accidents can often occur without warning, and this accident appears to have been no different. The construction worker was injured when a form wall fell over, trapping his right foot.

The call for help came in the afternoon. Emergency responders arrived at the scene and had to call in two of their technical rescue teams. The rescue required them to stabilize the concrete and dirt located behind the form wall, while also protecting the worker for further harm if there was another collapse.

The wall had to be propped up to prevent it from coming down and firefighters had to remove all of the concrete and gravel that had fallen and buried the construction worker. The man couldn't escape by himself because his foot was trapped and he was buried all the way to his waist in concrete. The worker was given a helmet to protect him from any other debris that could fall during the rescue. Paramedics treated the man during the rescue and gave him something for the pain. Reports state the man was awake and alert throughout the ongoing rescue efforts.

Fortunately, the rescuers believe his injuries may have only been minor and think he may have possibly suffered a broken ankle. In a strange twist and an event that could have been fortuitous for this worker, fire teams had practiced a similar construction rescue only days earlier. Construction accidents in Massachusetts cannot always be prevented, but a quick response and highly trained rescue officials can sometimes minimize the damage that occurs. When construction accidents like this occur, workers are often entitled to receive workers' compensation. These benefits are designed to help workers with medical bills and wages that they may lose during their recovery periods.
