Massachusetts man seriously injured in a crash, expected to live

Whether for exercise, recreation or short distance travel, many Massachusetts residents are bringing out bicycles as the weather begins to cool off and fall is right around the corner. As cyclists take to the streets and back roads, it is important for those in automobiles to recognize the inherent disadvantage bicyclists have in the event of an accident. Cyclists are at a significantly higher risk to be injured in a crash when an automobile is involved.

An Ipswich man was severely injured in a crash recently when another man struck his bicycle while making a turn. The bicycle rider was thrown over the roof and onto the ground behind the car. Police reports indicate sun glare may have played a role in the collision, yet the car driver was still issued a citation for not exercising care and caution while turning.

EMTs secured the victim with a neck brace for the serious injuries prior to taking him to a local fire station, where medical air transport waited. Another traveling couple that came onto the scene first was said to have comforted the man until paramedics arrived. This simple gesture of kindness and compassion may have helped the man stay conscious until help arrived.

The man was very fortunate to have had a helmet on at the time of the accident. Even though being injured in a crash while riding a bike is not something most people think will ever happen to them, it is very important to take every precaution. In the event of an accident such as this, Massachusetts law provides protections and places accountability on those that inflicted the damage when it can be proven that they acted negligently. Compensation for lost wages, medical expense and pain and suffering related to the injuries sustained are all items of damage that may be claimed in a personal injury lawsuit seeking financial relief.
