Massachusetts bicycle accident leaves 1 dead and young girl injured

Massachusetts authorities are trying to piece together the details of a recent fatal accident involving a Dodge Ram, a bicycle and a pedestrian. A bicycle accident involving any motor vehicle is often tragic, and this one was particularly so. While the details remain sketchy, what is known is that the Dodge Ram collided with a little girl on a bike, seriously injuring her and killing her mother's boyfriend.

Police say there are differing accounts, and an investigation is ongoing. Some witnesses reported that the truck driver drove around a vehicle that had stopped to allow the little girl and her mother's boyfriend to cross the street. The girl's bicycle was lodged under the pickup, and she was transported to Massachusetts Hospital in Boston where she was said to have stabilized but remained in serious condition.

Police have been discussing their investigation with prosecutors, though no charges have yet been filed. Authorities were seeking a warrant to seize the driver's cell phone.

The truck driver has a lengthy driving record dating as far back as 1983. He is said to have been found responsible for at least four separate motor vehicle accidents, and his driver's license has now been suspended indefinitely.

As the investigation continues, one life has been lost while another hangs in the balance. A bicycle accident under any circumstances is frightening, but one involving a little girl just learning how to ride is heart wrenching. That a man simply trying to help his girlfriend's daughter get across the street should end up dead is unfathomable.

Both the family of the deceased victim and that of the seriously injured girl will likely want to assess their rights under Massachusetts law should the evidence document that the fatal accident was caused by the negligence of the truck driver. In addition to any criminal charges that might apply, the truck driver may also face a civil lawsuit for personal injury to the little girl and for the wrongful death of her protector.
