Pittsfield boy attacked by pit bulls, neighbor's negligence?

A mother helplessly watched in horror as her 9-year-old son was allegedly mauled by two of her neighbor's pit bulls. The attack occurred on Monday of last week at approximately 9:30 p.m. in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, near the backdoor entrance to their apartment common area. There were three pit bulls involved, and the 29-year-old mother claims that all three attacked her son; however, Pittsfield police say only two of the pit bulls actually attacked. Regardless of the exact number, the alleged negligence of these pit bull owners has apparently caused serious physical and emotional suffering to this child.

The mother says that when her son opened the backdoor to a hallway in a commons area of the multi-family dwelling, the pit bulls leapt out and snatched him. They proceeded to drag him down the apartment's steps, violently attacking him. Taken to Berkshire Medical Center, the boy was treated for 35 puncture wounds to his head, neck and face. His 29-year-old father reported that his son had a 3-inch-by-3-inch segment of his scalp ripped off by the dogs.

The owners of the dogs, both 42-years-old, have apparently had a previous documented assault issue. He was apparently charged with multiple felony counts. These charges also concerned a pit bull, which allegedly attacked its owner in connection with an alleged domestic assault in 2007. It was not clear if the dog in that attack was involved in the recent attack at the complex. All three pit bulls are now confined at a shelter, and their future is pending a thorough investigation.

The Massachusetts boy is no doubt currently suffering from his physical injuries as well as emotional trauma in relation to the dog owners' alleged negligence in purportedly permitting such a frightening and lethal attack. While it may be difficult for him, or any young child, to describe exactly what happened in such an event, the evidence of his injuries may go a long way toward documenting what actually occurred. According to his mother, she was planning on moving out of the apartment later this month, but has since said she will never return to the premises.
