Motorcycle accident prevention tips for motorcyclists and drivers

The dangers that a driver behind the wheel of a vehicle face and the dangers that a motorcyclist face differ greatly. Therefore, for sheer self-preservation, it is imperative that a motorcyclist help prevent themselves from becoming a victim in a motorcycle accident. While motorists do need to be aware of motorcyclists, it is the duty of all parties to pay attention and take reasonable care. With May being Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month, one Chief of Police in Massachusetts shares some motorcycle accident prevention tips.

Motorcyclists should never assume that drivers can see them. It is always a good decision to wear bright clothing to be noticeable to others on the road. Don't wear black at night, as this is difficult to see, or wear a fluorescent vest over dark clothing. In addition, motorcyclists should make every reasonable attempt to avoid any blind spot of a vehicle.

Aside from knowing precautionary things to do to prevent a motorcycle accident, it is good to recognize when motorcycle crashes are most likely to occur. Drivers often rely on their mirrors to make a turn or change lanes rather than checking their blind spot. Also, a car making a left turn in front of a motorcycle often leaves the motorcyclists susceptible to a possible accident. It is good practice for motorcyclists to be on alert for drivers making left turns.

A motorcycle accident is understandably more likely to occur in hazardous road conditions, including weather and road construction. In order to prevent motorcycle accidents from happening, it is always best for drivers to remember that motorcycles are on the road. Motorcyclists and motorists in Massachusetts can prevent a number of accidents from happening just by paying closer attention and following a few motorcycle accident prevention tips.
